Spartan Volleyball Tryout Information – Aug. 2022

Tryout Dates:

Monday Mon. 1  - Thursday Aug. 4 

* Girls will be assigned to either tryout Group A or Group B before they leave each day, so they know when to return the next day.

All Athletes selected for a team are expected to attend practices every day, unless ill (this needs to be communicated with a coach before practices). Practices will take place Monday – Friday, starting Aug. 1st until the end of season.  Athletes will be expected to attend two practices a day until school starts.  Once school begins, practices will be once a day, Monday through Friday.  

Tryout/ Practice Location – West Springfield High School Main Gym

Tryout Criteria - Must have to tryout:  

• A physical on a VHSL form dated after May 1, 2022 (emailed to - )
• Register for volleyball on  the school’s sports’ website - 
  • westspringfield.rschoolteams.com
• Both a parent and athlete must complete the concussion education course online. 

Tryout Evaluation

• We believe in a fair tryout for all athletes.  No decisions have been made or will be made concerning team selection until the tryout period.
• Athletes evaluated on volleyball skills, coachability, attitude, effort and physical abilities

Number of Athletes per Team

Varsity: 10-14, JV: 10-12, Freshmen: 10-12, practice players 0-4

Process of making cuts

*Unfortunately each year we have to cut athletes from the volleyball program.  As coaches we do not enjoy doing this, but we cannot keep everyone.  Please know that not making a team does not mean you need to stop playing volleyball.  If you truly love the sport there are other opportunities to play.  Girls cut from the program are encouraged to remain involved as a manager.

• Each athlete who participates in tryouts will have a face to face conversation with a coach to be informed of her status; Cut, Practice Player, Freshman, JV, or Varsity
